Growing up, I loved I Spy books. Every page was a treasure trove of colors, trinkets, and hidden objects. It was a feast for the eyes, and nothing felt more satisfying than finally spotting that elusive item. That’s exactly what thrifting feels like!
I have expensive taste and appreciate a quality furniture piece. I love the idea of owning heirlooms that I can someday pass down to my girls. But all that comes with a price—a price I often can’t afford. So, I thrift.
Let’s be honest, too—the feeling of finding something you’ve been searching for (or secretly wanting) for months or even years at half the price? Incredibly rewarding. Over the years, I’ve learned there are certain items I always keep an eye out for. Here are my top thrift store must-haves:
1. Serving Utensils
I always grab beautiful serving utensils. The more ornate, the better. I enjoy hosting, and I’ve learned that you can never have too many serving spoons or salad tongs. As someone who went to culinary school and loves cooking, I believe presentation is just as important as taste. Beautiful serveware is like a bow on a present—it elevates the entire dining experience.

2. Vases
Fresh flowers instantly make a house feel like a home, and a unique vase takes them to the next level. I’m a sucker for anything blue and white or brass. Whether minimalist or intricate, a good vase is always worth grabbing.

3. Fabric
I always buy fabric when I find something I love. I’ve used thrifted fabric to sew café curtains, recover lampshades, and even reupholster small furniture pieces like footstools. Sometimes, I find fabric samples from high-end brands—perfect for turning into throw pillows. Don’t forget to check for trim, too! I once scored five yards of gold bouillon fringe for less than the price of one yard new. I sewed it onto the edge of a brocade curtain I also thrifted, instantly giving it a more luxurious feel.

4. Quilts
There’s nothing like a homemade quilt. They embody warmth, comfort, and craftsmanship. I look for patterns and colors that already complement my home. I store them in a cedar-lined chest for guests and drape them at the foot of our beds in the winter for extra coziness.

5. Frames & Paintings
Oil paintings are my all-time favorite thrift finds. While antique stores often have them at a premium, every so often, I’ll stumble upon one at a thrift shop for a steal. If I can’t find the perfect painting, I’ll grab antique or gilded frames instead. A frame with "good bones" can always be repainted—my go-to trick is using Rub ‘n Buff to customize them to match my decor.

6. Books
Books are everywhere in thrift stores, and they make fantastic decor pieces—even if you’re not a big reader. I always opt for hardcover books, especially classics. Antique books are another favorite since their typography and detailing are often so ornate. They look beautiful stacked on shelves or coffee tables.

7. Brass
I love anything brass! I’ve found several brass wall sconces that truly make my home feel unique. You can shine brass up for a polished look or let it develop its well-earned patina. Either way, it’s a timeless material that adds character to any space.

8. The Weird Stuff
I once heard that the "weird stuff" is what makes your home truly yours, and I couldn’t agree more. Sometimes, these items take time to curate, while other times, they call out to you immediately. When in doubt, I grab it—worst case, I can always resell or donate it later. My small collection of Staffordshire dogs might baffle my family, but I find them charming. A little quirky? Maybe. But that’s exactly what makes a home feel special.
Thrifting is an adventure. You never know what you’ll find, and that’s part of the magic. Whether it’s a stunning oil painting, an ornate serving spoon, or a quirky little treasure you never knew you needed, the thrill of the hunt keeps me coming back for more.
